TIPS TO CARE FOR YOUR EYESIGHT

(NC)-October is Eye Health Canada Month, a time to reflect on the value of sight for yourself, your family, and others. Throughout the year, there are frequent fundraising events supporting eye health research and numerous Canadian organizations devote their energies to it full time.

"Every year for example, The Foundation Fighting Blindness (ffb.ca) sponsors numerous fund-raising events to support and promote research directed to finding the causes, treatments, and cures for retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration and related retinal diseases," says Bijan Minbashian, vice president of operations for Hakim Optical, a recognized leader in retail eye care.

"Our favourite fundraiser is the national Ride For Sight event, a two- or three-day rally involving thousands of motorcycle riders in every region of the country. Several million dollars has been raised by Canada's motorcycling community in its 27-year history - and indeed once again last June, our company founder, Mr. Hakim, lead the riders on his gallant chopper to participate in the fun of field games, show 'n shines, and visually spectacular processions."

Guard Against Eye Strain

If your eyes water, or lids twitch, or if you have a burning sensation when you close them, you could be suffering from eye strain. Here are some Hakim tips to guard against potential damage:


Reading: Hold material 30 to 40 cm from your eyes, with sufficient light coming from behind your left shoulder. Use a lamp with a 60- or 100-watt bulb.

. Television: Keep room lighting dimmer than the TV screen, preferably as much as 50 percent, with no glare. Don't watch in darkness. Sit in front at a distance of four times the width of the screen.

. Video Display Terminals: Sit at least 50 cm away and view at a downward angle of about 20 degrees. The room lighting should not be as bright as the screen, and don't allow glare from windows.
