aware of this true story regarding a microwave oven. Almost everybody now uses a
microwave oven, in spite of the adverse reports, based on clinical studies, as to how it
affects food.

A young man of 26 put a cup of water into the microwave to boil for coffee, as he had
always done. When the timer sounded, he removed the cup but noticed that the water
was not boiling. Suddenly the water, (not the cup), exploded into his face, due to a
build-up of energy, scalding him severely.

The doctor treating him said that this was a frequent occurrence and that water should
never be boiled aon its own in a microwave oven; always add a teabag, or a wooden stir

FEATURE ARTICLE: Do You Have Lazy Eyes?

We're referring here not to the cool 'lazy' look that romantic fiction
writers project as the epitome of male machismo, but to a medical
condition!

Lazy eye is a condition where normal vision has failed to develop
in an otherwise healthy eye. Technically known as amblyopia, it
means that one eye doesn't see as clearly as the other eye even
with prescription glasses or contact lenses. A convergent squint
is sometimes referred to as a lazy eye, but lazy eye can occur
with or without 'strabismus', which is a crossing or turning of
the eyes.

Strabismus (squinting) is attributed to one or more weak eye
muscles, although sometimes the problem is due to a defective
neurological signal to the involved muscles.

Let me emphasize that, with regards to amblyopia and strabismus,
the benefits of eye muscle training are medically proven.
There are many scientific articles in optometric journals which
state that it's never too late to treat lazy eyes.

RECIPE FOR HEALTH : Lavender Marinade

------------------------------------------------------------------
Lavender has medicinal properties, and it smells wonderful! What
a healthful combination for an aromatic (and very unusual marinade).

You can use this marinade for grilled chicken, as a salad dressing,
and also to season steamed vegetables.

Marinade Mix:
Lavender: 4 fresh sprigs
Orange zest: 2 tsp, finely grated
Garlic cloves: 4 crushed
Olive oil: 2 tbsp
Thyme: 2 tsp, freshly chopped
Basil: 2 tsp, freshly chopped
Honey: 2 tsp
Salt to taste

Mix the ingredients together and steep for 20 minutes
before using. It's best fresh, but will keep up to 3 days
in the refrigerator.

"THE VIAGRA MYTH"
How medicine and marketing made sex the benchmark of successful aging

(NC)-In 1998, a little blue pill called Viagra lifted the spirits of middle-aged men
around the world. But, according to researcher Barbara Marshall, it may also have
created the unrealistic expectation of eternal sexual youth.

"Viagra changed the way we talked and thought about sex," says Marshall, a
sociology professor at Trent University. "Suddenly, it wasn't just a dirty topic.
It was a public health concern."

With almost 16 million men prescribed Viagra in the past six years, its
marketing success has given rise to a whole new area of medical research.

"Sexual health used to be about reproduction and the absence of sexually
transmitted disease," explains Marshall, whose research is funded by the
Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).
"But now, especially with our aging population, sexual performance and
desire are being redefined as markers of healthy living."

But despite the nine Viagra tablets dispensed every second, Marshall notes
only half of all Viagra prescriptions are ever refilled.

"These new drugs make it physically possible for almost any man to have sex,"
she says. "But they don't create sexual desire."

The 1994 Massachusetts Male Aging Study, which has tracked male sexua
health for almost 20 years, discovered that while men in their 60s had less
sexual intercourse, they reported the same level of satisfaction with their
sex lives as younger men in their 40s.

"This demonstrates that sexuality isn't purely mechanical," says Marshall.
"And the science of desire, rather than mechanics has now become a keen
commercial interest."

Armed with the knowledge that testosterone levels and libido are linked,
testosterone patches are now routinely prescribed to men with age-related
declines in the male hormone, and are in development for menopausal
women with low levels of sexual desire.

"But should we really label changes in sexual activity over our lifetimes,
or over the lifetime of a relationship, as dysfunctional?"

Changes in sexual behaviour are an understandable response to changing
life circumstances, says Marshall, and a natural (and healthy) part of aging.
While some people do suffer real physical and emotional problems related
to sex, she hopes her research will encourage people to question the new
sexual "norms" being pushed by market-driven medical research.
