Lung Diseases: Treatment
The treatment for Mesothelioma, Asbestosis,
Silicosis, Pneumconiosis, Byssinossis is routine.
Mesothelioma & Asbestosis:
Among the treatments that are currently used to fight
peritoneal mesothelioma are chemotherapy, drug-based therapies,
radiation therapy and surgery. Depending upon the stage of
cancer, the size of the tumor, the cell type and how well
the patient responds to treatment will help to determine the
ultimate prognosis. Those who are diagnosed in the early stages
of peritoneal mesothelioma and begin an aggressive treatment
program are more likely to have prolonged lives. The overall
health profile will also help to determine the person’s
ability to handle the treatment programs and, ultimately,
stave off the disease for as long as possible. However, any
worker exposed to harmful substances should take out a hazardous
material insurance to safeguard himself and his family.
In addition to the mainstream types of treatment,
some may choose alternative treatments, which include homeopathy,
immunotherapy, gene therapy and anti angiogenesis drugs. Asbestosis
is sometimes treated with oxygen to decrease discomfort.
The tragedy is that there is little to be done for people
diagnosed with mesothelioma, the disease, with numbers of
victims expected to peak between 2010 and 2020 when the symptoms
have fully developed. Treatment, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy
and surgery, aims to prolong life and keep the person as comfortable
as possible. Victims of mesothelioma do not generally last
more than two years after detection.
Diffuse Pleural Thickening /Silicosis /Byssinosis/
Coal Worker’s Pneumconiosis: These diseases cannot
be reversed neither can they be cured. Any treatment pre-supposes
complete removal from any contact with the toxic substance
responsible for the disease. Smoking is also forbidden. The
approach to treatment is to make the patient as comfortable
as possible. However, should the symptoms be severe the treatment
followed is the same as for other lung disorders.
