Tinnitus
Tinnitus is a noise that seems to originate in the ear or head. Though we are unaware of the noises in our head, some tinnitus or head noise is normal. It is possible to become aware of such ‘head noise’ if one goes into a sound proof booth which blocks out normal outside noise. We then hear these body sounds normally masked by external noise.
The ringing, swishing, or other sounds associated with tinnitus could point to an underlying condition or disorder, although it is not a serious condition in itself. Nearly 36 million North Americans suffer from this disorder and live with the nuisance in varying degrees of discomfort.
Causes of tinnitus
Tinnitus can start from any of the parts of the ear - the outer ear, the middle ear, the inner ear. It can be caused also by abnormalities in the brain, foreign bodies in the external ear, fluid, infection, or diseases of the middle ear bones or ear drum, and diseases of the inner ear.
There have been cases of tinnitus resulting from serious problems like brain tumours or an aneurysm, but such cases are rare. Noise pollution or constant bombardment of high decibel levels can lead to tinnitus, apart from permanently damaged hearing. Damage to the microscopic endings of the hearing nerve in the inner ear is another common cause of tinnitus.
And then there is the natural process of aging. This could also lead to impairment of the hearing nerve, and so result in tinnitus.
It is important to realize that the hearing system is one of the most delicate and sensitive mechanisms in the body. Being a part of the general nervous system, the hearing system too is impacted by factors that affect overall health, both physical and psychological.
Control of tinnitus
The intensity of tinnitus, can be controlled by lifestyle changes such as:
Minimizing exposure to extreme levels of noise
Blood pressure control
Change in dietary habits such as low-salt diet
Avoiding stimulants
Meditation in order to reduce anxiety and stress levels
Adequate sleep
Regular exercise
